Hastings - our fantastic city - is 150 years old today. On 8 July 1873, at exactly 2pm, Francis Hicks subdivided 100 acres into 144 sections in the middle of the Heretaunga Block. In a waiata-ā-ringa, or action songs, the lyrics are supported by symbolic hand movements. The performers flutter their hands quickly, a movement called wiri, which can symbolise shimmering waters, heat waves, or even a breeze moving the leaves of a tree.
