Granite or Pegmatite? Picked from a field site, this coarse-grained rock shows pink feldspar crystals with shiny flakes of mica, classic features of a granitic material. The pink hue is from potassium feldspar (microcline/orthoclase), while the sparkle comes from muscovite and biotite. Such rocks form from slow cooling of magma deep in the crust, often marking continental crustal zones that may host rare metals or gem minerals in pegmatitic varieties. Stumbled on a forgotten quarry deep in the bush near Barry’s Bay The drill holes in the bedrock and the pink/white bands of quartz and feldspar suggest this was a small feldspar/quartz operation, probably worked in the early–mid 1900s. Today it’s just moss, leaves, and broken blocks of granite and pegmatite, but a hundred years ago this spot was feeding raw material into glass and ceramics instead of forest floor. #geology #Ontario #BarrysBay #rockhounding #fieldnotes | Legacy Crystals and Miner
