Tigers manager A.J. Hinch isn’t ready to hear about October baseball. Still, watching Tarik Skubal and Hunter Brown on the mound at Comerica Park on a Tuesday night, early evening showers giving way to a picturesque sunset reflected in the Detroit skyline,
Matt Vierling blasted a pinch-hit 3-run homer in the eighth inning for a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
The last time Hunter Brown pitched here, he was on the verge of losing his job. Now the Detroit native is an ace with Skubal-like numbers.
Tarik Skubal hit the 200-strikeout mark Tuesday night and, for the second straight season, got there before anyone else. The Tigers’ ace punched out 10 Astros over six-plus scoreless innings at Comerica Park, another metronome outing from the reigning AL Cy Young winner and this year’s front-runner.
With the Astros looking to stave off the Seattle Mariners and the Tigers looking to further increase their seeding in the AL, it's a big series for both organizations. Skubal is on the mound in game two, and so is the Astros ace, Hunter Brown.

Brown is prepping for his latest Detroit homecoming. Friends and family will fill the stands. And something about this one feels different.
After some initial audio issues, Hinch, Benetti and former Lions offensive lineman T.J. Lang joked that it was Benetti's fault that, right when Hinch got on the broadcast, the Dolphins scored. And Hinch sarcastically agreed. "I blame Benetti for everything," Hinch said.
