Rain was falling across the Northeast on Sunday afternoon, bringing a much-needed assist to firefighters battling a major wildfire straddling the border of New Jersey and New York. While Saturday marked 42 days without any measurable rainfall in the city of Philadelphia,

The largest was West Milford’s Jennings Creek wildfire, which straddles the New York-New Jersey border. The fire had so far consumed 2,500 acres and threatens 25 structures, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said late Sunday morning. The blaze was at 0% containment as of Sunday morning, the West Milford Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The Jennings Creek fire is currently burning across 3,500 acres, officials said, and is expected to grow to over 5,000 acres.

A quarter of an inch of rain fell on the Jennings Creek fire early Monday morning, which helped crews get some much needed rest. The fire remains at about 3,000 acres and is 10% contained, officials said.
