One of Winamp's strongest features is that it includes a plugin system allowing third-party developers to extend or modify the program's functionality.

Winamp is now much more than a music player, Llama Group says, as the program embodies a unique digital culture, aesthetic, and well-known user experience.

In response, a group of developers has launched a "Save Winamp" campaign aimed at convincing AOL to release the program's source code.

The division was formed earlier this year through the combination of Spinner and Nullsoft, a software firm AOL acquired last year largely for the rights to its popular media player program Winamp.
