Arizona takes No. 1 in AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll, Iowa State up to No. 4, Gonzaga into top 10
Arizona has taken the top spot in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll. This comes after a perfect start to the season.
For the first time this season, Arizona came in at No. 1 in the AP Poll after a win over Auburn, which fell one spot to No. 21. It's the first time the Wildcats have claimed the top spot since December 2023, and it's the third time the Wildcats have been on top with Lloyd as coach.
Arizona jumped to No. 1 in the latest poll and received 33 first-place votes. Michigan (19), Duke (seven) and Iowa State (one) also received first-place votes in the poll. The Wildcats own wins over UCLA, UConn, Auburn and Florida.
“Naturally, the eventual national champion tends to be highly ranked in any given week, but the week six poll in particular has, over the last 14 years, proven to be better than the rest all the way to Selection Sunday,” Gasaway wrote on December 10, 2018.
After the loss to Cal on Nov. 25, UCLA would fall out of the AP top 25 rankings, sending a clear message that the Bruins are not the team everyone thought they were. However, the Bruins would win their next two games, both against conference opponents, and they now see themselves at No. 25
