Derby fire prompts evacuation notice

The Derby Fire, located north of Dotsero in White River National Forest grew to 839 acres Tuesday evening, according to the Watch Duty app. The measurement is more than three times the 245 acre estimation Tuesday evening. The growth has prompted evacuation orders in the area of Sweetwater Lake and a complete closure of Colorado River Road.
The two fires are called the Derby Fire, located in Eagle County near Garfield County, and the La Plata Fire, located in Chaffee and Lake counties in the Pike-San Isabel National Forests.
The U.S. Forest Service on Tuesday issued the following press release on the Derby Fire in Eagle County: MINTURN, Colo. (Aug. 19, 2025) – The White River National Forest has issued a public closure for firefighter and public safety in Eagle and Garfield counties in the vicinity of the Derby Fire.
