Common symptoms of heat-related illness include excessive sweating, cramping, and disorientation. Heat stroke is a more extreme form of heat-related illness and can be dangerous in terms of fatalities. “Heat stroke occurs when people develop really dry and hot skin, so they can no longer cool themselves off,” Morales said.

Dangerously hot conditions hit states up and down the West Coast over the weekend, owing to a persistent heat wave stretching from the Pacific Northwest to California and the desert Southwest.

Parts of California, Oregon and Washington state will experience extreme heat at least through Tuesday, forecasters said.
